Keeping an Eye on the Details: 79 Bills and What They Mean for You

This year, there are 79 different bills at the state level that could directly impact the County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. That may sound like just another number at the Capitol—but here at home, those bills translate into real changes for how we serve you.
They affect everything from elections and motor vehicle services to recording documents and vital records. And while some of these proposals are helpful, others can create unintended consequences—especially when it comes to cost, efficiency, and accessibility.
That’s where strong, attentive leadership matters.
Looking Beyond the Title of a Bill
Not every bill is as simple as it sounds. A proposal might look good on paper, but once implemented, it can:
Increase wait times
Add unnecessary steps for customers
Require expensive system upgrades
Shift costs onto taxpayers at the county level
My approach is straightforward: don’t just read the bill—understand how it works in real life.
How I Will Evaluate These Bills
As your County Clerk and Recorder, I will take an active role in reviewing legislation by focusing on three key questions:
1. Does it improve service for the public? If it doesn’t make things clearer, faster, or more accessible, we need to question it.
2. Is it financially responsible?Counties are often required to implement state mandates without full funding. I will carefully evaluate whether a bill creates hidden costs that fall on our taxpayers.
3. Can it be implemented efficiently?Even a well-intended bill can create delays or confusion if it doesn’t align with how clerk offices actually operate.
Working with the Colorado County Clerks Association
One of the most important parts of this job is collaboration. I will work closely with the Colorado County Clerks Association to:
Review proposed legislation
Share real-world feedback from county offices
Advocate for practical, workable solutions
Testify when needed to ensure rural counties like ours are heard
This ensures that decisions made in Denver reflect the realities we face here at home.
Protecting Taxpayers While Improving Service
My goal is not to block change—it’s to make sure change is thoughtful, effective, and responsible.
That means:
Supporting legislation that truly improves services
Speaking up when proposals create unnecessary costs
Looking for smarter, more efficient ways to implement requirements
Making sure our county is not burdened with unfunded mandates
Fresh Eyes, Practical Solutions
With fresh eyes and real-world experience in leadership and operations, I bring a different perspective—one focused on how things actually work day-to-day, not just how they sound in theory.
At the end of the day, this office isn’t about checking boxes—it’s about serving people. Every bill, every change, and every decision should reflect that.
Because government should work for you—not the other way around.
